
Self-Employment Benefit Program
The Self-employment
benefit program (SEB) provides unemployed employment insurance eligible
individuals with income and entrepreneurial support while they develop
and implement their business plan over a period of 40 weeks. In
Leeds and Grenville this program is delivered on behalf of Employment Ontario
by the Grenville Community Futures Development Corporation and the
1000 Islands Community Development Corporation. Grenville CFDC provides
the delivery of the program, the classroom instruction and follow-up reporting.
ELIGIBILITY
CRITERIA
- Eligible
participants are those who, pursuant to the Employment Insurance
Act, are unemployed individuals:
- for whom
an unemployment benefit period has been established or has
ended within the 36 months prior to the date of requesting
assistance; or
- for
whom a benefit period that included a maternity or parental
claim has been established within the 60 months prior to the
date of requesting assistance
- Other criteria
may apply.
NOTE:
- Applicant
must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- The proposed
business must be NEW, FULL TIME and OWNER OPERATED
- The proposed
business must be approved for public support
- Commissioned
sales and seasonal businesses are not eligible for support
- Applicant
must have the required equity to invest in the business for start-up
- Applicant
must not have registered the business at the time of application
Eligible
Activity
Starting a new
business – new to the applicant. This may include the purchase
of an existing business, or new start-up.
DESCRIPTION
Financial Parameters
- Participants
receive agreed-upon financial assistance while working to implement
their business
- EI eligible
participants may also be eligible for personal supports, such
as assistance for disabilities, transportation, dependant care,
etc.
- Participants
are required to provide monthly income statements and reports
on the status of their business during the period of their financial
assistance.
Duration
- The maximum
duration of support is 40 weeks.
- The first
8 weeks of the program entail attendance in a classroom setting
with other participants to learn to write a detailed business
plan.
- The course
is normally taught at the Grenville CFDC offices, 197 Water Street,
Suite 405, Prescott
